Its hard to believe that Lenny Kravitz has been around for nearly a quarter century and continues to provide us with fresh music every couple of years. As the son of producer Sy Kravitz and actress Roxie Roker, Kravitz was born into a family of entertainers. He found success, however, solely by his own merit and has been a recording and touring star since the late '80s. Lenny Kravitz tour dates are currently scheduled periodically throughout North America this Summer, 2011.
Kravitz grew up in New York, attending school in Manhattan and living with his grandmother in Bed-Sty on the weekends. Kravitz was introduced to music at a young age and through his father's music connections was able to personally meet jazz icons Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald. The family soon moved to LA and Kravitz attended Beverly Hills High School where he taught himself to play the piano and bass which inspired his dream of becoming a professional musician. After graduating high school, Kravitz found that his sound (a mix of rock, R&B, and soul) wasn't an act A&R execs were looking to sign. Finding a deal proved to be difficult for the fledging musician, but, he persisted.
Kravitz self-produced most of the material for his debut album "Let Love Rule" with the helping hand of Henry Hirsch. They shopped the record around to various labels and a bidding war ensued. Kravitz eventually signed with Virgin Records in 1989 and released his debut album to rave reviews. The title track was a hit on both the radio and MTV, with the latter nominating Kravitz for a Video Music Award in 1990. Following the success of the album, Lenny Kravitz tour dates were booked on the opening slot for Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and Bob Dylan.
Kravitz and his relationship with Cosby show actress, Lisa Bonet, also made headlines as a media frenzy ensued over his personal life. Kravitz experienced a boom in his popularity when he co-wrote Madonna's "Justify My Love" single, whose lyrics and sexualized video became banned on MTV. The press ensured that Kravitz would be a mainstay in the tabloids, however, he was more concerned with producing quality music. In 1991 he released his sophomore album, the aptly titled "Mama Said", which is dedicated to Lisa Bonet. The single "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over", was a cross-over pop hit and secured a #2 peak on the Hot 100.
Kravitz's commercial success continued with his third album "Are You Gonna Go My Way", which reached #13 on the Billboard 200 and won him a MTV Video Music Award for Best Male Video for the title track. In support of the album, the Lenny Kravitz concert schedule included a headlining world tour entitled "Universal Love". By the late '90s, Kravitz was a familiar face and sound at award shows, on the radio, and on MTV. He released his fifth album "5" in 1999 and won his first Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal for the hit single "Fly Away". This marked the beginning of four consecutive wins in that category for Kravitz, culminating with his 2002 win for his single "Dig In".
At the beginning of the new millennium, Kravitz released his "Greatest Hits" album which proved to be his most commercially successful album to-date, selling nearly eleven million copies worldwide. Lenny finished up the decade with the albums "Lenny", "Baptism", and "It Is Time For A Love Revolution". For the latter album, Kravitz embarked on a mini-tour across the US in a bus. Lenny Kravitz's concert schedule in 2009 also included a 53-date "Let Love Rule" tour that visited Europe. During this time, Kravitz also branched out into acting roles and appeared in the critically acclaimed film "Precious".
Kravitz has spent the better part of the past two years perfecting his upcoming album, "Black and White America" which is scheduled to be released this Summer, 2011. In support of the album, Lenny Kravitz tour dates will include a supporting gig on U2's "360 Tour" which is currently on its North American leg. Additional Lenny Kravitz concert dates are scheduled periodically throughout the summer. Kravitz has proven his staying power through his musically evolved and eclectic mix of rock, blues, R&B, and pop music.
